Document layout analysis involves understanding the arrangement of elements within a document. This paper navigates the complexities of understanding various elements within document images, such as text, images, tables, and headings. The approach employs an advanced Transformer-based object detection network as an innovative graphical page object detector for identifying tables, figures, and displayed elements. We introduce a query encoding mechanism to provide high-quality object queries for c...

This work presents an accuracy study of the open source OCR engine, Kraken, on the leading Arabic scholarly journal, al-Abhath. In contrast with other commercially available OCR engines, Kraken is shown to be capable of producing highly accurate Arabic-script OCR. The study also assesses the relative accuracy of typeface-specific and generalized models on the al-Abhath data and provides a microanalysis of the ``error instances'' and the contextual features that may have contributed to OCR misrec...
The problem of converting images of text into plain text is a widely researched topic in both academia and industry. Arabic handwritten Text Recognation (AHTR) poses additional challenges due to diverse handwriting styles and limited labeled data. In this paper we present a complete OCR pipeline that starts with line segmentation using Differentiable Binarization and Adaptive Scale Fusion techniques to ensure accurate detection of text lines. Following segmentation, a CNN-BiLSTM-CTC architecture...
In recent years, the field of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) has seen the emergence of various new models, each claiming to perform competitively better than the other in specific scenarios. However, making a fair comparison of these models is challenging due to inconsistent choices and diversity in test sets. Furthermore, recent advancements in HTR often fail to account for the diverse languages, especially Indic languages, likely due to the scarcity of relevant labeled datasets. Moreover, ...
This paper presents the design and development of an OCR-powered pipeline for efficient table extraction from invoices. The system leverages Tesseract OCR for text recognition and custom post-processing logic to detect, align, and extract structured tabular data from scanned invoice documents. Our approach includes dynamic preprocessing, table boundary detection, and row-column mapping, optimized for noisy and non-standard invoice formats. The resulting pipeline significantly improves data extra...
Handwritten Chinese text recognition (HCTR) has been an active research topic for decades. However, most previous studies solely focus on the recognition of cropped text line images, ignoring the error caused by text line detection in real-world applications. Although some approaches aimed at page-level text recognition have been proposed in recent years, they either are limited to simple layouts or require very detailed annotations including expensive line-level and even character-level boundin...
State-of-the-art offline Optical Character Recognition (OCR) frameworks perform poorly on semi-structured handwritten domain-specific documents due to their inability to localize and label form fields with domain-specific semantics. Existing techniques for semi-structured document analysis have primarily used datasets comprising invoices, purchase orders, receipts, and identity-card documents for benchmarking. In this work, we build the first semi-structured document analysis dataset in the lega...
Visual Document Understanding (VDU) systems have achieved strong performance in information extraction by integrating textual, layout, and visual signals. However, their robustness under realistic adversarial perturbations remains insufficiently explored. We introduce the first unified framework for generating and evaluating multi-modal adversarial attacks on OCR-based VDU models. Our method covers six gradient-based layout attack scenarios, incorporating manipulations of OCR bounding boxes, pix...
In this paper, we investigate the usage of fine-grained font recognition on OCR for books printed from the 15th to the 18th century. We used a newly created dataset for OCR of early printed books for which fonts are labeled with bounding boxes. We know not only the font group used for each character, but the locations of font changes as well. In books of this period, we frequently find font group changes mid-line or even mid-word that indicate changes in language. We consider 8 different font gr...
With the growing adoption of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) in document processing, robust text recognition has become increasingly critical for knowledge extraction. While OCR (Optical Character Recognition) for English and other languages benefits from large datasets and well-established benchmarks, Arabic OCR faces unique challenges due to its cursive script, right-to-left text flow, and complex typographic and calligraphic features. We present KITAB-Bench, a comprehensive Arabic OCR be...
Converting images of Arabic text into plain text is a widely researched topic in academia and industry. However, recognition of Arabic handwritten and printed text presents difficult challenges due to the complex nature of variations of the Arabic script. This work proposes an end-to-end solution for recognizing Arabic handwritten, printed, and Arabic numbers and presents the data in a structured manner. We reached 81.66% precision, 78.82% Recall, and 79.07% F-measure on a Text Detection task th...
A semi-automatic open-source tool for layout analysis on early printed books is presented. LAREX uses a rule based connected components approach which is very fast, easily comprehensible for the user and allows an intuitive manual correction if necessary. The PageXML format is used to support integration into existing OCR workflows. Evaluations showed that LAREX provides an efficient and flexible way to segment pages of early printed books.
Conventional optical character recognition (OCR) techniques segmented each character and then recognized. This made them prone to error in character segmentation, and devoid of context to exploit language models. Advances in sequence to sequence translation in last decade led to modern techniques first detecting words and then inputting one word at a time to a model to directly output full words as sequence of characters. This allowed better utilization of language models and bypass error-prone ...
Handwritten document recognition (HDR) is one of the most challenging tasks in the field of computer vision, due to the various writing styles and complex layouts inherent in handwritten texts. Traditionally, this problem has been approached as two separate tasks, handwritten text recognition and layout analysis, and struggled to integrate the two processes effectively. This paper introduces HAND (Hierarchical Attention Network for Multi-Scale Document), a novel end-to-end and segmentation-free ...
Most datasets in the field of document analysis utilize highly standardized labels, which, while simplifying specific tasks, often produce outputs that are not directly applicable to humanities research. In contrast, the Nuremberg Letterbooks dataset, which comprises historical documents from the early 15th century, addresses this gap by providing multiple types of transcriptions and accompanying metadata. This approach allows for developing methods that are more closely aligned with the needs o...
This research paper presents a unique Bengali OCR system with some capabilities. The system excels in reconstructing document layouts while preserving structure, alignment, and images. It incorporates advanced image and signature detection for accurate extraction. Specialized models for word segmentation cater to diverse document types, including computer-composed, letterpress, typewriter, and handwritten documents. The system handles static and dynamic handwritten inputs, recognizing various wr...
The automatic recognition of tabular data in document images presents a significant challenge due to the diverse range of table styles and complex structures. Tables offer valuable content representation, enhancing the predictive capabilities of various systems such as search engines and Knowledge Graphs. Addressing the two main problems, namely table detection (TD) and table structure recognition (TSR), has traditionally been approached independently. In this research, we propose an end-to-end ...
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology is widely used to extract text from images of documents, facilitating efficient digitization and data retrieval. However, merely extracting text is insufficient when dealing with complex documents. Fully comprehending such documents requires an understanding of their structure -- including formatting, formulas, tables, and the reading order of multiple blocks and columns across multiple pages -- as well as semantic information for detecting elements...
We introduce AraMS-28k, the largest publicly released line-level dataset of genuine historical Arabic manuscripts, comprising 14 books, 3,043 pages, and 28,600 annotated text lines (27,971 main-text, 629 margin). Thirteen books are hand-copied manuscripts spanning three script traditions -- Naskh, Ruq'ah, and Maghrebi -- and one is a lithographed printed edition included to broaden format diversity. Each line is labelled as main-text or margin, and margin lines that have an unambiguous attachmen...
